Bo [Staff] Jutsu [Art]
Overview
The foundation of a good martial artist is Taijutsu, Biken-jutsu and Bo-jutsu. One must first learn Taijutsu properly before being able to training in staff.
Bo-jutsu training is comprised of using a 3 foot (Hanbo) and 6 foot (Rokushakubo) Bo (wooden stick/staff) for bowing, stances, striking, thrusting, blocking, rolling, locking, breath control, holding a staff, etc. The techniques come from various schools such as the following:
- Kukishinden Happo Biken-jutsu
- Kukishin Ryu Shobukyoku
- Tenshin Hyoho Kukishinden Ryu
- Hontai Kukishin Ryu
- Shinden Tatara Ryu
- Yagyu Shingan Ryu
Related arts are Jo-jutsu (3/4 staff), Tanbo-jutsu (small stick), Kasa-no-jutsu (umbrella/cane), and Tessenjutsu/Sensu Dori (iron fan). These arms however are usually taught at higher levels.
